Why was my credit card declined?Updated 16 days ago
Having a card declined can be frustrating! Common reasons for a credit card being denied include:
- Billing address mismatch: If you see an error like “zip/postal code does not match billing address,” it means the billing address you entered doesn’t exactly match the address on file with your card. Double-check that you entered the same billing address that appears on your credit card statement (the shipping address can be different, but the billing must match). Tip: if the problem persists, there might be a formatting difference – check your statement for how your address is listed.
- Card expired: Check the expiration date on your card. If it’s past that date, the card will be declined. Use a valid card or renew your card with your bank.
- Credit limit reached: It’s possible you’ve hit the credit limit on your card or there’s not enough available credit for the purchase amount. In this case, the transaction won’t go through. You might need to use a different card or contact your bank to increase your limit.
- Incorrect information: A typo in the card number, CVV (security code), or expiration date can cause a decline. Make sure all the details are entered correctly exactly as they appear on your card.
If your card is still being declined after checking the above, we recommend contacting your bank or credit card issuer. Sometimes banks will block a transaction if it’s outside your usual spending pattern or for security reasons. A quick call can often clear this up. Meanwhile, you can also try a different payment method (another card, PayPal, etc.) to complete your order.
